Negroni

What is it?

Negroni is an Italian cocktail, made of one part gin, one part vermouth rosso (red, semi-sweet), and one part Campari, garnished with orange peel. It is considered an aperitivo. A traditionally made Negroni is stirred, not shaken, and built over ice in an old-fashioned or rocks glass and garnished with a slice of orange. Outside of Italy, an orange peel is often used in place of an orange slice. Nowdays is a very popular way to make negroni is to use an oak barrel and age the cocktail. The process is simple and the taste is more complex, rich and smooth.

What does it taste like ?

A negroni is a bitter cocktail but the vermouth and orange garnish add enough fruity sweetness to balance it out. The taste is herby, a bit rooty - think liquorice root - and then there are some deep dark fruit flavours. The gin is present too so there's that classic juniper tang, notes of lemon and coriander seed.

Can I make it at home?

One of the best things about this cocktail is how easy it is to make and to make well. All you need is just pour all the ingredients 25ml each into a stir glass over some ice cubes. Give 25-30 sec stir and strain in a rock glass. Add a slice of orange and Salute !
